Apiam Animal Health (AHX) has received a $700,000 grant to build a new viral vaccine laboratory in Bendigo from the Victorian State Government Regional Employment Fund.

The funding will allow the company to accelerate the development of the facility.

AHX said local production of viral vaccines will fill a critical gap in the Australian animal health market, with strong potential for future exports.

It will fill a need within the national agricultural industry to combat a range of endemic and emerging viruses.

This includes Japanese encephalitis, which currently affects the domestic pig segment.

He has begun a collaboration with a potential vaccine research partner, La Trobe University, and is working towards signing a formal collaboration agreement.

Chief Executive Dr Chris Richards said there is significant market potential in this area.

“We look forward to being able to provide a greater range of animal health solutions to our customer base and to working with our farming industries and communities to provide better protection for their livestock,” he said.

“We are also delighted to add around 40 jobs to our local Victorian regional communities.”
