At least 13 carjackings reported in Lincoln Park, Lake View this month: Police – NBC Chicago

At least 13 carjackings have been reported in Chicago’s Lincoln Park and Lake View neighborhoods this month alone, according to police data.

Officials say a man was beaten and had his teeth knocked out in an attack on Webster, the second to occur on the street last week.

CCTV footage showed three men approaching from the right and attacking a man getting out of his gray Lexus SUV, then dragging him into a stairwell to steal his keys and push him down the street.

A neighbor who spoke to the man after the attack told NBC 5 the car thieves had the wrong keys and followed the man around the block.

Out of frame in the footage, police say the man was beaten and had the correct keys stolen. The three men fled in the vehicle.

“They left pretty quickly,” said the neighbor. “It all happened in a minute – a minute and a half.”

After data showed nearly 2,000 reported carjackings in Chicago throughout 2021, Chicago Ald. Michelle Smith calls for a greater police presence and a review of the department’s prosecution policy.

“We know that so many of these carjackers know the police can’t chase them and are engaging in some pretty reckless driving,” Smith said.

According to the latest data, Chicago’s carjackings are on course to break a 20-year record.
