Car fire on DuSable Lake Shore Drive rumbles through afternoon rush hour traffic; Driver unharmed

CHICAGO — North side traffic on DuSable Lake Shore Drive came to a standstill Friday afternoon after a car burst into flames in the middle of the road.

The fire started in a car in the southbound lanes near Belmont Avenue, according to a Block Club reporter who witnessed it. Fire crews could be seen spraying the car, which was lodged against the guardrail. At some point, there was an explosion inside the car.

The car’s owner told a Block Club reporter that he had problems with his car’s battery and collected his car from the mechanic on Thursday. He said he thinks the battery exploded while he was on the road and started the fire. The driver was not injured.

Firefighters could not provide additional information.
