City plans to close a section of Lake Shore Boulevard West over the weekend of May 15 for ActiveTO

The city says it is working on a plan to include the popular Lake Shore Boulevard West route in its ActiveTO road closure program later this month.

Speaking at a town hall press conference on Wednesday, Mayor John Tory said city staff plan to expand the program beyond the current closures of Bayview Avenue and Shore Bouelvard Lake East.

From this weekend, roads through High Park will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday and Sunday to give pedestrians and cyclists more room to get some fresh air.

Closures will also return along a busy stretch of Bayview Avenue and Lake Shore East Boulevard.

“City staff are working to have an ActiveTO road closure on Lake Shore Boulevard West for next weekend (May 15),” Mayor John Tory said Wednesday.

The Lake Shore West route consistently attracted the most pedestrians than any other area during last year’s program, which ran from May through October.

According to data released by the city, an average of 18,000 cyclists and 4,000 pedestrians took advantage of Lake Shore West closures on days without heavy rain last summer.

The city initially chose to exclude the busy road this year because of concerns about planned roadworks nearby that would already significantly impede vehicle traffic. The city later decided it would try to find a way to include it on certain weekends.

Tory said the city had a “good turnout” last weekend for the first round of ActiveTO shutdowns in 2021.

“I took a Bikeshare bike myself to check it out and it was great to see people outside staying with members of their own household, it seemed, and enjoying the space to walk, run. and ride a bike, ”he said.

The following roads will be closed to ActiveTO from Saturday, May 8 at 6 a.m. until Sunday, May 9 at 9 p.m.:

• Bayview Avenue, between Front Street East and Rosedale Valley Road

• River Street between Bayview Avenue and Spruce Street

• Lake Shore Boulevard East (eastbound lanes only), between Leslie Street and Woodbine Avenue.

• Roads through High Park will be closed to vehicular traffic every weekend from Friday at approximately 11:00 p.m. until Monday at approximately 7:00 a.m.
