UPTOWN – A popular pedestrian path connecting Uptown to the lakeside has been closed by the city after crews discovered structural damage in the tunnel.

The Buena Avenue underpass in the 4200 block of North Marine Drive was closed “for safety reasons in response to crumbling concrete,” said Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman Michael Claffey.

City crews are assessing the extent of damage in the pedestrian tunnel under DuSable Lake Shore Drive to determine what repairs are needed, he said.

A timeline for its reopening has yet to be set, said Kylie Ruscheinski, Ald’s chief of staff. James Cappleman (46th).

The underpass connects the Buena Park neighborhood to the Lakefront Trail and the Peace Garden just east of Du Sable Drive which is maintained by community members.

The tunnel has shown signs of deterioration in recent years. In January, chunks of concrete fell from the ceiling of the tunnel, exposing the structural beams below, according to CBS 2.

The tunnel murals have already been painted in anticipation of needed repairs to the structure, neighbors said.
