Jharkhand MPs relax at MayFair Lake Resort in Raipur

Ranchi/Raipur, Aug 30: MPs affiliated with ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party and Jharkhand Congress party have been relocated to Raipur amid political uncertainty in the state.

The political crisis erupted in the state after Governor Ramesh Bais reportedly submitted his report to the Election Commission of India which sent its opinion to Raj Bhawan in a complaint related to the profit bureau. Chief Minister Hemant Soren is accused of having obtained the mining lease attributed to his name when he was a departmental minister.

Sources said the Commission would not issue a notification based on the governor’s report. However, Soren had taken the hint and started working on damage control. Although the Raj Bhawan has not issued an official communication, the possibility of Soren being disqualified as a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly has not been ruled out.

The state would, however, plunge into a major political crisis if Soren were also barred from running for office. This could lead to political uncertainty and the possibility of a split. Congress, with its 16 deputies, was the most vulnerable. Of the 16, three are now in Kolkata after being arrested for carrying huge sums of cash.

The JMM has 30 MPs, but the possibility of a split within the party is low. This could only be possible if there was a chance of a midterm election after Soren’s resignation.

Keeping this point in mind, the JMM-Congress leadership decided to transfer its MPs to Chhattisgarh, which is governed by the Congress. During the last three days, the exercise continued. Earlier in the day, it was reported that the MPs would be transferred to Rajasthan, another Congress-ruled state.

Finally, it was decided to organize recreation for MPs in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. A chartered plane took them from Ranchi around 4 p.m. and joined them around 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, a thick security blanket has been opened in and around MayFair Lake Resort, a luxury destination in the Nava Raipur. The hotel had stopped taking reservations because the entire property had been reserved for the 47 deputies in addition to the senior congressional leaders who had accompanied them.

A 5 km green corridor has been created from Raipur airport to the hotel for security reasons.
