Man shot and 2 others beaten in Lake View East robbery

A man was shot and two others were beaten in a violent robbery Tuesday night in the Lake View East neighborhood.

The group was walking around 11:25 p.m. in the 600 block of West Buckingham Place when several armed men exited a vehicle and approached them demanding their belongings, police said.

The group refused and the assailants began beating them, police said.

One of the gunmen fired into the group, hitting a 28-year-old man in the buttocks, police said.

He was taken to Masonic Medical Center in Illinois where he was listed in fair condition.

The attackers took the woman’s purse and the group’s mobile phones before fleeing the area, police said.

The man and woman, both 27, suffered bruising and swelling to their faces but refused treatment at the scene, police said.

Justin Stewart, who lives in the neighborhood, heard the din.

“I heard a few pops and didn’t think much about it at first. Then we got our phones out, and of course before you knew it it was already on the Citizen app and scanner of the police,” Stewart said. “It’s very scary. It’s become very surreal walking around at certain times of the night, which years ago you wouldn’t even think twice about, and now all of a sudden Suddenly, 11:30 p.m. is almost too late to be out here in Chicago.”

No one is in custody as Area Three detectives investigate.
