Beijing-based firm META-Project designed this triangular stage-like gazebo built on a forest hillside at Songhua Lake Resort in Ji Lin, China. Completed in 2017, the structure also functions as a flexible public space where exhibitions, meetings, workshops and other events can take place.

Adjacent to a forest of Mongolian oaks, the building is a “dark, floating monolith” that contrasts sharply against a snowy backdrop during winter. In summer, the building is surrounded by lush vegetation.

META-Project designed the triangular floating design of the gazebo to minimize its impact on existing vegetation as much as possible, while maximizing views of the beautiful landscape at platform level. The structure features Shou-Sugi-Ban siding (charred cedar shingles) that can appear silvery under certain sunlight angles.

Upon entering the concrete vestibule, a narrow stairway leads to the viewing platform, which opens up to sweeping panoramic views of Songhua Lake. A pair of ovals perforate the roof and floor, to let in sunlight and let visitors peek into what’s “below the stage,” says META-Project. The interior of the deck features untreated red cedar walls that add color and warmth in contrast to the dark exterior of the structure.
