The new Loblaws in Bathurst and Lake Shore is finally opening this week

A highly-anticipated new Loblaws store will be opening in a few days in Lake Shore and Bathurst, and it looks to be one of the fanciest yet.

The massive new location transforms what was once a Loblaws warehouse, dating back to 1928. It was abandoned in 2000, but was then dismantled brick by brick beginning in 2016 by ERA Architects.

Now the grocery store is set to open this weekend, though the Loblaws will be joined by a Shopper’s Drug Mart, Joe Fresh, offices and residences as part of the stunning new West Block East. 1928 project by Choice Properties and Wittington.

The historic Groceterias warehouse structure that houses the Loblaws is topped by an office structure designed by architectsAlliance.

The Loblaws occupies 4,000 square feet of the ground floor, the entire 45,000 square feet of the second floor and a 1,650 square foot mezzanine. Shopper’s is expected to occupy 12,000 square feet and Joe Fresh 6,400.

The exterior of the building has been reconstructed with restored brick and limestone, and blinds with an inset pattern have been added to the windows on the second and third floors.

There should also be a cafe and office lobby along Lake Shore on the ground floor, and watch out for other freestanding retail spaces being developed around Bathurst and Lake Shore and the area by Gardiner.

Loblaws is set to open its new Lake Shore and Bathurst stores on September 11.
